Alaska hit by 7.0 magnitude earthquake

12/07/25

A few hours ago, a massive earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale struck Alaska. The main tremor was followed by two dozen smaller ones. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in a sparsely populated part of Alaska northeast of the city of Yakutat.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey of Alaska, the earthquake struck near the town of Yakutat, which is located less than three hundred miles from the capital, Anchorage. According to many witnesses, the tremors were also felt there.

According to data from NASA's Earth Observatory satellite, there are an average of eighteen earthquakes measuring 7 to 7.9 on the Richter scale each year. At the same time, there is one earthquake measuring greater than 8 on the Richter scale each year.

The director of operations for the Alaska Earthquake Center said there were no reports of injuries or damage. He acknowledged, however, that the tremors were felt in many parts of Alaska and Canada. It is not unexpected for such strong earthquakes to occur in areas with major faults.

The main quake was followed shortly by twenty smaller aftershocks, the strongest of which was a magnitude five. According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, this is a relatively strong sequence of aftershocks.

A magnitude 7 is strong enough to cause landslides. More aftershocks are expected in the coming days to weeks. Unfortunately, there is a chance that another strong aftershock could occur within the ongoing sequence. However, according to NOAA reports, no tsunami warnings have been issued. It is likely that damage to roads will be found soon and landslides may also occur in mountainous areas.
