According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Paratebuano in central Colombia, 170 kilometers from Bogota. The actual magnitude of the main tremor is disputed, as the Colombian Geological Survey reported that it measured it at 6.5 on the Richter scale. The main tremor was followed by several smaller aftershocks, two of which exceeded magnitude 4.
City residents gathered in parks and in front of buildings as it was unclear whether the tremor had damaged the structural integrity of some buildings. According to locals, the tremor was very noticeable and buildings throughout the city shook.
Bogota Mayor Carlos Galan said that according to preliminary reports, no one was injured in the earthquake, except for one person who had to be taken to a nearby hospital with an anxiety attack.
The earthquakes caused power outages in some parts of the city, but these were restored on Monday. A closer inspection of the houses revealed minor structural damage to several houses, including damage to walls and facades. Damage was also reported to a highway in the area.
Earthquakes in central Colombia are relatively frequent due to its geographical location. There is a high level of seismic activity, as evidenced by the massive 6.2 magnitude earthquake in 1999. The earthquake caused enormous damage and killed 1,200 people.
