Wildfires in California began on Tuesday and have been spreading uncontrollably into populated areas since then. Firefighters are struggling with high winds and dry vegetation. The situation only began to improve towards the end of the work week when the winds began to subside.

It is already clear that the Palisades and Eaton fires will rank among the top five most destructive fires in California. The situation remains unclear and other smaller fires are likely to erupt. Local authorities have ordered evacuations from all affected locations and on Friday they were also ordered in the San Fernando Valley.

The fires in and around Los Angeles have already consumed 55 square miles of land with the local sheriff comparing the devastation to the aftermath of an atomic bomb. Numerous drone footage shows some locations unrecognizable with flames leaving only the outlines of homes and yards.

There are currently five fires burning in California. The largest is the Pacific Palisades fire followed by the Eaton fire near Altadena and the Angeles National Forest. The other fires are the Kenneth Fire in Los Angeles County and the Hurst Fire north of San Fernando. The smallest of the fires is the Lidia Fire in the Angeles National Forest.

It is unclear at this time when firefighters will be able to bring the fires under control. The damage they have caused will be astronomical, as the affected areas are home to very expensive real estate. President Joe Biden has pledged that the federal government will pay for all cleanup costs for six months after the fires.
