Unusually heavy rainfall has triggered floods and landslides in northern Italy. Among the hardest hit is Brazzano, in the province of Gorzia, near Trieste. The town is home to around a thousand people who live in close proximity to the Collio mountains and the Judrio River.
Authorities said two people were killed, an elderly woman and a younger man. The landslide also hit the town of Cormons, near Brazzano, where firefighters were searching for missing people.
According to meteorologists, 250 millimeters of precipitation fell in the entire area in eight hours. The surrounding rivers soon began to overflow their banks. The rainy weather is expected to continue at least until the end of next week, as a large part of Europe will be affected by a advancing low pressure area, which will bring heavy rain and snowfall to Central Europe.
According to the mayor of Cormons, around 300 residents have been evacuated. He also noted that the rain has brought the entire community to its knees and caused serious damage. There is a massive presence of police, firefighters and civil protection forces throughout the city.
The extreme weather also hit parts of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, causing widespread damage and disrupting transport. The regions of Lombardy, Tuscany, Umbria, Emilia Romagna and Liguria were also on high alert.
