Plastic pollution in the oceans is one of the biggest problems facing the world, costing economies, industries and the environment up to $2.5 trillion a year. The $7.5 billion investment in cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is well worth it and we need to act fast. The costs of inaction are already catastrophic, threatening marine ecosystems, human health and the environment.

The Ocean Cleanup notes that eradicating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is achievable within ten years, but some models suggest it could be done in less time. The cleanup could be done more quickly and cost-effectively.

It's been more than six years since The Ocean Cleanup first set sail with the ambition to develop technology to rid the world's oceans of plastic. With the experience gained, it's time to consign the garbage patch to history.

The organization has developed technology to extract plastic from ocean eddies and unveiled the results of its mining operations late last year. Over the past three years, half a percent of the total accumulated waste has been removed.

The organization is also calling on governments, corporations, individuals and foundations to prioritize solving this global problem. In 2025, mining operations are suspended to launch a new initiative aimed at finding and mapping hotspots with intense plastic accumulation. This is precisely what can subsequently increase the efficiency of mining.

The Ocean Cleanup has also developed a unique technology to capture plastic in rivers so it doesn't end up in the oceans. By August 2024, over 16 million kilograms of waste had been collected from aquatic ecosystems around the world.
