Hurricane Erick made landfall in Mexico on Thursday morning, with its center located 30 kilometers east of Punta Maldonado. The hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour when it made landfall. It was a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall.

The hurricane is currently moving northwest at 15 kilometers per hour and is expected to head inland over southern Mexico. If forecasts hold true, it will weaken significantly and gradually dissipate by Friday.

Meteorologists are warning that the arrival of the hurricanes will be triggered by very strong winds, flash flooding and storm surge that will continue for the next few days. A hurricane warning has been issued for the entire coast between Acapulco and Puerto Angel.

The hurricane is expected to drop up to 400 millimeters of rain in Oaxaca and Guerrero. With such high rainfall totals, there is already a risk of possible landslides in areas with steep terrain.

The Mexican states of Chiapas, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco can expect up to 150 millimeters of rainfall. Waves were up to ten meters high when the hurricane hit the Mexican coast. Mexican authorities were continuously preparing for the hurricane to make landfall to ensure the safety of all local residents and tourists. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged residents to stay home or move to shelters. Around two thousand temporary shelters have been set up in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero.
