Brazil has been hit by a tropical cyclone that brought winds of up to 60 miles per hour to Sao Paulo. The strong winds soon caused widespread power outages affecting nearly one and a half million residents in the city.

On Thursday, large parts of Sao Paulo were left without electricity. Strong winds caused power outages and several large trees to fall in the Brazilian capital. Fortunately, no one was injured, but nearly 400 flights had to be canceled.
More than 1,300 Enel workers are currently on the streets of Sao Paulo, working to restore power. Due to the damage in many areas, no date has been set for restoration.
The city hall of Sao Paulo reported that 231 trees fell as a result of the extratropical cyclone that formed in southern Brazil. Aviation authorities reported that most of the canceled flights involved the local Congonhas airport and Guarulhos international airport.
Mayor Richard Nunes' administration is responsible for the tree trimming in the city. He criticized the power company, calling it irresponsible. This is not the first time that millions of residents have been left without electricity as a result of a similar incident. As of Wednesday, about two million residents were without power.
Many residents, including water utility Sabesp, are also complaining about the city's electricity supply. The utility said on Thursday that the power shortage was already affecting its pumps, which are now not working properly. Sao Paulo also experienced widespread power outages in 2023 and 2024, which put Enel in trouble.
