Storm Martinho is set to hit most of Spain today the fourth storm to hit the country in two weeks. Warnings of strong winds and rain have been issued. Storm Laurence caused flooding earlier in the week killing two people. The flooding has caused several roads in Spain to be closed due to damage and has also disrupted train and air services.
The Canary Islands are on alert after strong winds caused widespread damage last week less than a week after Tenerife and Gran Canaria were hit by devastating floods. Other storms to hit Spain in the past two weeks were Jana and Konrad.
An orange warning for strong winds has also been issued for Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia. Strong winds are also likely to hit the northwest. In the south of the country storm Martinho will bring heavy rainfall reaching up to forty millimeters in a day. Rain and thunderstorms will also be in western Andalusia and will continue until Friday.
Some parts of Spain received up to 100 millimeters of rain. The heaviest rainfall was in the coastal town of Águilas where 70 millimeters of rain fell in an hour. Cars were swept away by the raging rivers and rescue workers had to rescue dozens of residents. Rescue services in Malaga and Seville were also busy.
