Storm Éowyn swept through Ireland and England

1/31/25

A week ago storm Éowyn swept through parts of England and Ireland causing power outages for a million customers. At the same time record wind gusts of 183 kilometers per hour were recorded in Ireland. In some places, the wind tore off roofs, and even one wind farm.

A County Donegal man lost his life in Ireland when a tree fell on his car during the ravages of Storm Éowyn. Very strong winds caused power outages in 725,000 properties in Ireland alone. Another 138,000 residents experienced limited water supplies.

In Great Britain the government urged millions of residents to stay at home as wind gusts here too were around one hundred and sixty kilometers per hour. As a result of the storm many flights in Scotland had to be canceled and there were also restrictions on rail transport. In Northern Ireland all schools were closed as trees brought down mature trees that damaged buildings.

The eye of storm Éowyn was over Ireland so it caused the most damage there. Many power outages have already been restored but some outlets may not be connected until next week. In Scotland power outages affected 117,000 households and businesses. In England the most outages were reported in County Durham Tyne and Wear and Cumbria.

Today we already know that 1,124 flights had to be canceled as a result of the storm which affected around one hundred and fifty thousand passengers. The restrictions mostly affected Dublin, Edinburgh, Heathrow and Glasgow airports.

In Northern Ireland bus services were also stopped and even all Tesco stores were closed. Strong winds churned up the surrounding seas, forcing ferry operators to cancel crossings. Storm Éowyn is the first of the powerful storms to sweep across Western Europe. The second was the storm Herminia which hit France.
