Storm Herminia hits western France

1/29/25

Since the beginning of the week western France has declared a high state of alert due to the heavy rains brought to the territory by storm Herminia. A part of Brittany is dealing with floods where a red weather warning has been issued. An orange alert was declared in eight other French departments.

On Monday, storm Herminia unleashed the worst flooding in the Brittany region in 40 years. Among the most affected departments is Ille-et-Vilaine where the administrative center of Rennes is located. Meteorological service Meteo France warned that the situation could gradually worsen.

Storm Herminia also brought heavy rainfall to other departments which are currently on alert for flash floods. In the case of the French Alps there is also a serious risk of avalanche danger.

Experts agree that river levels should start to drop from the middle of the week. In the city of Rennes 400 residents living near the city's canal Saint-Martin had to be evacuated. They were all temporarily moved to the gymnasiums which will serve as temporary shelters. The rising water raised the houseboats to the same level as the cars in the street.

Storm Herminia which brought heavy rainfall to France follows Storm Eowyn which hit Ireland and the United Kingdom last weekend. The situation in France was exacerbated by the fact that the ground was already soaked by previous persistent rainfall.

Local authorities warned that both road and rail transport could be disrupted across the Brittany region. Firefighters have to clear uprooted trees in a number of places that are blocking railways and roads in western France.

Scientists have long warned that climate change caused by humans burning fossil fuels is making storms more frequent and more destructive. The impacts of a changing climate have been felt across the planet in recent decades.
