Storm Johannes swept through Scandinavia

The Swedish Meteorological Service has issued a strong wind warning for much of the northern half of the country due to the approaching storm Johannes. And it was the strong winds that caused a tree to fall at the Kungsberget ski resort, causing a tragic incident. A 50-year-old man was killed and further north, an energy worker for Hemab died in an accident at work.

The unusually strong winter storm Johannes has already caused tens of thousands of power outages in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Extensive power outages are being reported in Sweden, affecting more than forty thousand households. The storm has reduced both road and rail traffic.

Firefighters in Norway responded to two hundred incidents in the Nordland region due to strong winds. Around thirty-two thousand households in Norway were affected by power outages, both in the north of the country and inland.

Storm Johannes also swept through Finland, leaving power outages affecting around sixty thousand homes. Air traffic in Finland had to be restricted after strong winds knocked a commercial jet and a smaller plane off the runway and into a skid. There were 150 passengers on board the Swiss Airlines plane, and no one was injured.
