Meteorologists are currently closely monitoring the development of tornadoes in northern Florida and eastern Georgia. In addition to tornadoes, the main threat here is storms accompanied by destructive winds. The area in which the storms are forming extends from the upper Ohio Valley and western Pennsylvania to the rest of the mid-Atlantic. A cold front is expected to sweep across the US by midweek, before the situation improves.

A total of 26 tornadoes have been reported in the United States so far driven by a low-pressure system across Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi and Missouri. Experts agree that it is unusual to see such extreme storms in March.

More than 150,000 people were left without power in the affected areas as a result of numerous storms and tornadoes. The highest number of fatalities was reported in Missouri where a total of 12 people died in five counties. The storms in Missouri destroyed more than 500 homes, including a church a grocery store and a mobile home park.

In Mississippi six deaths were reported in three counties. Damage was reported in twenty-one counties and 29 people were injured. There were three deaths in Arkansas and six more in Kansas where a mass casualty incident occurred due to a dust storm as was the case in Texas. Significant damage was also reported in Alabama where several tornadoes struck.
