Lake Baikal

By far the deepest lake is Baikal, reaching a depth of an impressive 1,642 meters. The lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the oldest lake in the world. Baikal holds twenty percent of the world's unfrozen fresh water.

Lake Tanganyika

At 1,470 meters deep, it is the second deepest lake in the world, located in four countries, including Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia. The lake contains approximately 18 percent of the world's fresh water.

Caspian Sea

The lake is 1025 meters deep and is bordered by Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, and Azerbaijan. Eighty percent of its water is supplied by the Volga.

Lake Vostok

In fourth place is the lesser-known Lake Vostok in Antarctica. The lake is one kilometer deep. It contains a huge amount of water hidden under a 500-meter-thick layer of ice.

Lake O'Higgins-San Martin

The lake is located in the territory of Chile and Argentina in the Patagonia region and with a depth of 836 meters it is the fifth deepest lake in the world.

Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi is located on the border of Malawi and Mozambique and is 706 meters deep. It is home to almost a thousand species of cichlids.

Issyk-Kul

The seventh deepest lake in the world is located in the Tian Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzstan and its depth reaches 668 meters. It is a lake that never freezes.

Great Slave Lake

The deepest lake in North America, located in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The lake is 614 meters deep.

Crater Lake

The lake is located in the US state of Oregon in a volcanic crater and is the deepest lake in the country. The lake has no outlet or inflow and was formed by the eruption of Mount Mazama.

Lake Matano

The tenth deepest lake in the world is Matano in Indonesia. At 590 meters deep, it is also the deepest lake in the world located on an island.
