There are over 1,500 active volcanoes in the world and fifty to seventy of them erupt every year. Most of them are found in the area of ​​the ring of fire. The vast majority of the highest volcanoes in the world lie in the Andes.

Ojos del Salado – 6893 m

It is the highest active volcano in the world and at the same time the second highest mountain in the Andes. Its location is along the border of Chile and Argentina.

Monte Pissis – 6793 m

The largest inactive volcano in the world is located in the province of Catamarca in Argentina and is also the third highest peak of the Andes. It is characterized by very low temperatures at the top and at the same time it is also difficult to climb.

Nevado Tres Cruces – 6748 m

The third highest volcano is again located in the Andes and covers an area of ​​a thousand square kilometers. The volcano is not active and the last eruption occurred sixty-seven thousand years ago.

Llullailaco – 6739 m

Another of the volcanoes located in the Andes is a stratovolcano on the border between Chile and Argentina. The bottom of the volcano is made of thick lava flows. The volcano is still active, but the last eruption occurred in 1877.

Incahuasi – 6621 m

The Incahuasi volcano consists of two stratovolcanoes on the border of Argentina and Chile. The volcano is characterized by alternating layers of ash and lava in a 3.5 kilometer wide caldera.

Tipas – 6600 m

Tipas Volcano is located near Ojos del Salado and consists of a series of craters, lava flows, cones and lava domes covering an area of ​​25 square kilometers.

Tupungato 6570 m

The Tupungato volcano is mostly known for the plane crash in 1947. The downed plane was not found for fifty long years due to the massive layer of snow and ice on the summit.

Nevado Sajama 6542 m

The Nevado Sajama volcano is located in Bolivia and is the highest peak in the country. Together with other volcanoes, it forms part of the Andean volcanic arc.
