WeatherSunshine.com - Articles - The ten countries with the greatest biodiversity
12/19/25
In the following article, we will introduce the ten countries with the highest species diversity in the world. There are many ways to measure biodiversity, we will focus on five groups of animals, which include amphibians, fish, mammals, birds and reptiles. Vascular plants are also included in the measurement. Invertebrates were not included in the measurement due to a lack of data in many countries. Individual countries are ranked by the percentage of species in each group relative to the total global number of species for each group.

Brazil
Brazil is a champion in biodiversity, thanks in large part to the Amazon rainforest, the Mata Atlantica forest, and the Pantanal. It is home to a variety of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and ranks second in the world for the number of amphibian and mammal species. It ranks third for the number of birds, reptiles, and fish.
Indonesia
Composed of more than ten thousand islands, Indonesia is home to a wide range of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, including the third largest rainforest in the world, the Coral Triangle. It is home to the largest number of mammal species and is second only to Australia in terms of fish. Indonesia is the only country in the world where rhinos, orangutans, elephants, bears and tigers can be found all in one forest.
China
The vast Asian country is home to a staggering array of habitats, from tropical forests to deserts. China stands out for its number of bird, plant and fish species.
Colombia
Colombia is in fourth place because it is very rich in amphibians, birds and plants. There are 1,917 species of birds here, which is more than any other country in the world. The diversity of ecosystems is truly great and includes tropical forests, mountain habitats, grasslands and islands.
Peru
Peru is the third South American country on this list, and it’s no coincidence. Home to the Amazon rainforest, Peru is a country rich in birds, amphibians, mammals, and plants.
Mexico
Mexico is home to Mesoamerican rainforests, dry forests, mountain habitats, and deserts. It is home to many representatives of all five animal groups considered in the ranking.
Australia
In Australia you will find the Great Barrier Reef, deserts and tropical rainforests, which are home to a huge variety of fish and reptiles.
India
The vast territory of India contains a number of ecosystems with a huge diversity of species. But what makes India stand out is the number of birds and reptiles.
Ecuador
Ecuador is a relatively small country compared to the others on the list, but that doesn't stop it from surpassing the entire United States in terms of biodiversity. There are 1,684 species of birds and 688 amphibians in the Andean-Amazonian region and the Galapagos Islands.
United States
The United States is the tenth most biodiverse country in the world, thanks to its vast geographic extent and range of ecosystems from tundra to tropical forests. However, the United States stands out mainly for its number of fish species.
