Heavy rains brought by Typhoon Wutip to central Vietnam have caused floods that have submerged tens of thousands of hectares of crops and disrupted transportation. Provinces from Quang Bing to Quang Nam were hit by torrential downpours on Friday. The waters began to recede on Saturday, but the damage remained extensive.

Local authorities said the cities of HueQuang Tri and Quang Binh were the hardest hit. Search teams were continuing to search for two missing people. The floods destroyed more than 670 hectares of rice fields, 30 hectares of cassava, 1.5 hectares of peanuts and 3.5 hectares of lotus trees. In total, about 88,000 hectares of crops were flooded.

The floodwaters have flooded a total of 3,500 houses in central Vietnam, with many severely damaged. Typhoon Wutip has also severely disrupted air traffic since Thursday. Dozens of flights were canceled or delayed at Da Nang airport alone. The final of a beauty pageant, which was to be held on the Huong River, was also postponed due to the deteriorating weather conditions.

The typhoon began to weaken gradually on Saturday evening and headed towards China's Guangdong province. Once it weakened to a tropical depression, it gradually dissipated as it moved inland towards the northeast. More than 49,000 fishing boats returned to ports in China due to rough seas.
